State of the art foot and running gait analysis

Scientists have been investigating how to minimise the risk of injury when running since as far back as the running boom of the 1970s.

One of their key findings has been that the running shoes we wear are an essential factor in preventing injury. A good running shoe should:

  • Provide good cushioning for managing impact loading
  • Provide good support
  • Keep feet aligned

However, just as every person is unique, so are our running styles. A person and their shoes form a functional unit that can only be assessed as an integral whole. This is because the forces acting on the feet affect the whole of the body.

The body responds to them by modifying muscle activity with the aim of keeping its movement pattern as even as possible.

If the structure of the shoe helps the body to maintain this movement pattern, muscle activity reduces and if not, it increases.
